Refers to harmful microscopic algae in seawater, proliferating to higher than normal concentrations often discoloring the water to red, brown, green or yellow color.
Can be toxic t fish, birds, marine life and can cause human illness.
Caused by Karenia brevis in Florida, Gulf of Mexico and can occur in the Atlantic coast.
Toxins produced by the algae are brevetoxins.
