Defined as a disconnect from reality associated with delusions, hallucinations and disordered thinking.

Can be secondary to an underlying psychotic disorder or can be caused by drug abuse or medical illness.

Can occur in patients with delirium, and in dementia, as a direct manifestation of an underlying medical condition.

HIV associated psychosis includes sudden onset without prodrome, delusions, hallucinations, and mood symptoms.

HIV associated psychosis as associated cognitive impairment most commonly.
